About the project

AppTutor revolutionised private education by creating an on-demand mobile platform that seamlessly connects students and parents with qualified tutors in their local area. Using sophisticated matching algorithms and location-based technology, the app makes finding the perfect educational match effortless.

Working closely with the AppTutor team, I crafted an intuitive and modern user experience that stands out in the competitive education app market, making it simple for both tutors and students to connect, schedule and learn.

User Research Methods Used

Value Proposition Canvas

As the product was brand new, I created a value proposition canvas with the client to identify the key customer needs and wants

Competitor analysis

I compared competitor products and websites to identify and understand opportunities and industry standards

User flow diagram

I created a visual representation of the current user’s flow to identify which steps could be improved or redesigned

Sitemap

I created a diagram of the website’s pages organised hierarchically to visualise the new structure and navigation

Personas

I highlighted key user demographics and created personas to help empathise with users

Usability testing

I performed one-to-one remote interviews with users to validate and feedback on the new flow, design and features

Testing Results

Our usability testing confirmed a key insight: users strongly valued the ability to discover nearby tutors through an interactive map interface. However, testing also revealed a crucial gap - tutors needed better scheduling control within the app. In response, we introduced a streamlined booking management system that allowed tutors to accept or reject student requests directly through the app. This enhancement proved highly successful when re-tested, eliminating the need for third-party scheduling tools. The feature also enabled us to display real-time tutor availability to students, creating a more efficient booking experience for all users.

Final Reflections

Due to the nature of a start up business, one of the biggest challenges I faced with the design of the app was the multiple changes of direction in company vision and goals. This resulted in a re-design of the initial designs before launch however with each direction change came new insight and ideas, and when tested with users, the new designs were much more suited for everyone's needs and goals resulting in an overall improved user experience.TP section description here
